Wye Valley walks from Chepstow

Chepstow is the southern gateway to the Wye Valley, and Vauxhall Cottage is an easy walk from the river and the start of the Wye Valley Walk. Set off from the door for a short riverside stroll, or make the cottage your base for longer days in the woods and the valley. Dogs are welcome.

From the front door

  • The River Wye: about 15 minutes. Walk through the park by Chepstow Castle to the riverbank, and follow the path along the water. If you're lucky, you may see Sammy the Seal.
  • The Wye Valley Walk: about 20 minutes. The long-distance trail follows the river upstream from Chepstow, so you can walk a short stretch or plan a longer day.
  • Offa's Dyke Path. The path begins close to Chepstow, which makes the cottage a handy starting or finishing point if you are walking it.

A short drive away

St Pierre Great Wood

Woodland with a network of tracks and trails, about a 10-minute drive from the cottage. The paths make circular walks of anything from half an hour to an hour, and dogs can enjoy it off the lead, so please keep them under good control. There is parking at the start, with space for roughly ten cars. See the start point on Google Maps.

Barnett's Wood

Another local woodland, good for a quiet ramble among the trees when you want a change from the river.

Tintern and the lower Wye Valley

Tintern Abbey and the valley's woodland tracks are about 5 miles up the river from Chepstow, an easy trip by car for a longer day out.

The Forest of Dean

Across the border, the Forest of Dean has miles of woodland trails, plus attractions like Puzzlewood, and makes a good day out when you want somewhere bigger to explore.

Stay close to the paths

Vauxhall Cottage is a detached 1790s cottage in Chepstow that sleeps 7, with a private garden, a wood-burning stove and covered parking. Yes. Offa's Dyke Path starts close to Chepstow, so the cottage makes an easy base for walking all or part of it.
Can I bring my dog on these walks?
Yes. Dogs are welcome at the cottage, up to 3 of them, and the riverbank, the Wye Valley Walk and the local woods are all popular with dog walkers. St Pierre Great Wood is woodland where dogs can be off the lead, but please keep them under good control. Check the rules on the day around livestock and in the grounds of historic sites.
